Great arts centre with a coffee shop, open late so good if you're wanting somewhere quiet to hang out anytime. Tea and coffee were nice as were the cakes, and menu had a lot of variety.

Mareel - Music, Cinema and Education Venue
Located in Shetland. It is a multi-purpose venue.

The purpose of Shetland Arts is to place the arts at the heart of Shetland, to educate, promote, support and develop the practice and enjoyment of the arts by all.

Shetland Arts Development Agency was founded in 2006. It brought together the work of two organisations (Shetland Arts Trust and the Islesburgh Trust) whose collective histories provide Shetland Arts with a local, national and international reputation for arts development and delivery, built over 20 years of work and innovation.

Today, the purpose of SADA is to place the Arts at the heart of Shetland, to educate, promote, support and develop the practice and enjoyment of the Arts by all. We do this by:

Promoting and supporting the creation, practice, presentation and study of the Arts, at a personal and professional level.

Improving access to the Arts for all.

Supporting personal development and lifelong learning through the Arts.

Promoting excellence in artistic quality and encouraging new work.

Providing facilities to support artistic activities.

Shetland Arts runs Mareel and the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick, and Bonhoga Gallery in Weisdale. We promote a year round programme of music, craft, theatre, literature, visual arts, dance and film events.

Excellent venue, and well priced. Interesting things on quite frequently. Very good cafe and bar downstairs and don't forget there is a bar upstairs as well. Nicely thought out as well, the toilets have hand towels instead of dryers, so it's quiet for people watching stuff.

Designed for clean looks , sacrificing usefulness, no signage. Hard to access. Staff not very helpful.

A little bit dissaponting. Such a beatiful open space, perfect conditions for social distancing. Yet the managment chose to close the whole upper floor and minimise the space avalaible to customers. Not sure where the logic is. Whisky from a plastic cup, because dishwasher was broken, very limited food options (and we weren't looking for anything fancy..) Other places are dealing with covid much better...very friendly staff though, so not all bad after all!

An excellent place to be when in Shetland! Excellent food, cocktails and atmosphere. The cinema is great, but due to the two screens, films aren't always on at the best of times and do not always fit in with public transport. I have not yet experienced the live music there, but I have been advised by the locals that it is not to be missed - better get on it!
