While it will be forever known as sycamore gap it's with a sense of sadness I visited for the first time after the tree had been felled.

The area is still amazing and hopes that the tree will sprout 🌱 again and grow look uncertain in April 2025 with last year's shoot in poor condition.

Well worth the effort to visit , enjoy the stunning view as step in the footsteps of Roman soldiers.

Great circular walk from Steel Rig car park to the nearby Roman Fortress at Halsteads.

Wanted to visit here earlier post the vandalism that occurred 2 years ago. I walked Hadrian’s Wall twice, in 2011 and 2014 and took time out to experience the magnetism that surrounded the Sycamore tree landmark.
It was a sad experience today to witness what was done to it, but hopefully in years to come the numerous saplings that were grown from the tree will grace this majestic gap in the wall again. Sadly at 71 years old it won’t be in my lifetime.

Stunning views, saddened there is no tree anymore.
Nice walk, up and down the hills. Be aware there is an easier path around the back to reach the sycamore gap for those who might find it difficult to climb.
Would recommend!

Walk from Steel Rigg car park there are two ways to approach the sycamore gap one is alot of up and down steps along hadrians walls the other flatter but still with hills and around the back way. nice walk for all abilities. Such a peaceful place ❤️🫶 just missing the Tree 🌳😥

This once majestic tree has been felled by some mean spirited callous person. A reminder to please look after our treasured monuments and nature. One positive is that the sign states that the stump is sprouting. It will never be the same though.
Still drawing a crowd and the view through the gap and along the wall nearby is incredible.

Such an unnecessary act to commit, but we still had a lovely walk along Hadrian's Wall and seen the new shoots coming from the old sycamore tree

Lovely walk from the Sill national landscape discovery centre up past Peel Cottage and then east along the top line following Adrian‘s wall to the Sycamore gap where the stump of the Sycamore tree that was previously there is now to be seen. You can come back along the bottom path which is much easier going, but it’s well worth the ups and downs of the upper path on the way there.
