Brilliant, knowledgeable, fun, kind, friendly staff everywhere. Loads to see, touch, do & learn. Lovely cafe & gift shop. Archeological team working outside in real time digging up history. Brilliant to see & appreciate the last 2000 years of history.

Had difficulty getting here due to road closures, but the museum is well laid out and some of the exhibits can be touched, it needs to be used in conjunction with the vindolanda ticket as the two complement each other. My only criticism is that the video room needs a door as the noise from school visits can drown out the audio.

It's worth buying the combo ticket for Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum. Both museums are excellent, and while there is some overlap in the history presented, the two complement each other and build a fuller picture.

A very comprehensive display capturing an accurate and interesting recreation of Roman Army life and military tactics along with meticulously appointed life-like models of soldiers and weaponry. There are regular screenings of a video in the theatre which explains various aspects of the dispays. Museum conveniently located with a short walk ithrough rural fields to segments of Hadrian's wall and arcialogocal diggings. Entry fee very reasonable with a cafeteria, gift shop, parking and friendly staff.

If you're interested in history it is a brilliant museum, starting in the classroom visit and a quick appreciation on the Latin language. Several galleries of interest, another video of life as a soldier on the wall is very impressive. Well worth the entry fee.

The Roman Army Museum – A Must-See Gem Near the Lake District

Just a short drive from the Lake District lies one of the UK’s most fascinating and underrated historical treasures: the Roman Army Museum, a sister site to Vindolanda. These two sites together offer an unforgettable deep dive into the Roman Empire’s reach into Britain—and they’re absolutely worth the trip.

The museum itself is a beautifully curated experience. From immersive films to authentic Roman artefacts, you’ll walk away with a newfound respect for the Roman legions and their daily lives on the edge of the empire. Many of the archaeological discoveries here are truly one-of-a-kind—you simply won’t find them anywhere else in the world.

Pair your visit with the excellent onsite café. Their soup and sandwich deal is hearty, delicious, and just what you need to refuel before heading to Vindolanda.

Tip: Buy the combo ticket. Exploring both the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda makes for a rich, full day of discovery into Britain’s ancient past. An educational, awe-inspiring experience for history lovers of all ages.

Side note: I took a couple photos of the ladies toilet spaces because they were absolutely gorgeous! I've never seen such richly decorated toilets like these before in a museum. Glorious.
