Absolutely incredible museum and it’s free! Great collections, mostly old. The pottery collection was one of my favourites. There are some paintings by big names like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. Also really gorgeous architecture

Fabulous time wandering around the exhibits, which are displayed beautifully. The art galleries are wonderful, and the artworks are cleverly displayed.
This museum is the perfect size. It's not too big and not too small. The building inside is beautiful. I will be back!

The Fitzwilliam Museum is truly a treasure trove of art, history, and culture nestled in the heart of Cambridge. From the moment you approach the grand Neoclassical building, you can feel a sense of awe and anticipation for what lies within.

Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the serene and welcoming atmosphere, even on a weekend. Unlike many popular museums, it wasn’t overcrowded, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. This meant I could take my time exploring the exhibits without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

The museum’s collection is incredibly diverse, spanning centuries and cultures. One of the highlights for me was the remarkable array of paintings, including works by renowned artists such as Monet, Van Dyck, and Titian. Each piece is displayed thoughtfully, allowing you to fully appreciate the intricate details and artistry.

For those interested in ancient history, the Egyptian artifacts are a must-see. The beautifully preserved sarcophagi, statues, and everyday objects provide a fascinating glimpse into life thousands of years ago. There’s also an impressive collection of Roman and Greek antiquities, including exquisite pottery and intricate jewelry.

Another standout area is the medieval and Renaissance galleries, showcasing stunning illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, and armor. The craftsmanship and detail in these pieces are breathtaking and transport you to another time.

The museum also houses an extensive collection of Asian art, including delicate Chinese ceramics, Japanese prints, and intricate textiles. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore art and history from a non-Western perspective.

One of the aspects I appreciated most was the calm and quiet environment. Despite visiting on a weekend, it never felt too busy. The museum seems to attract visitors who genuinely appreciate art and history, creating a relaxed and respectful ambiance.

The Fitzwilliam Museum is free to enter, although donations are encouraged and well-deserved given the incredible quality of the collections. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to answer questions or provide insights into the exhibits.

In addition to the permanent collections, the museum often features special exhibitions, so there’s always something new to discover. The café is also worth a visit, offering a pleasant spot to recharge with a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Overall, The Fitzwilliam Museum is a must-visit for anyone in Cambridge, whether you’re a seasoned art enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful and enriching way to spend a few hours. Its stunning collections, tranquil atmosphere, and accessibility make it one of the city’s true gems.

This is free to enter as long as there are not any special exhibits. When arriving, you will be met by some wonderful people that will provide information on the building. You can also get a map at the desk which we recommend.

This is on 2 floors, so be prepared to walk and spend an hour or to see everything. The interior decor is exquisite with beautiful statues all around the second floor.

You will see original artwork from famous artists (Picasso, Monet,...) as well as furniture and other items. There are plaques on the wall with the artist name and a brief description. You will find some amazing stories in these, so please read your favorites.

Part of the downstairs showcases some of the weapons and armor of the medieval ages. They even have a fully mounted knight on their horse. We didn't do a full review of the first floor as we started on the second. We recommend starting at the first floor.

At the end of the tour, there is a retail store with a plethora of items to buy for anyone's tastes. There is also a coffee shop if I saw right from the store too.

The Fritz William Museum is a delightful gem, where history, art, and a touch of whimsy collide. The friendly staff greet you with smiles so warm, you'll feel like you're entering an old friend’s home (if your old friend had priceless art). The complimentary map is a godsend — without it, you might find yourself getting lost in the endless galleries of fascinating exhibits, but at least you'd be lost in culture, not confusion. And the cherry on top? Free entry! Yes, you can experience centuries of art without your wallet feeling the pinch. So, go ahead, get lost in the museum — it's free for the regular displays - for arranged exhibitions you will need to purchase a ticket.

The museum in the center of Cambridge was founded by the will of Richard Fitzwilliam in 1816 and includes an exhibition of more than half a million objects, starting from antiquity and ancient Egypt. Entry is free. In addition, the museum has a cozy cafe and a shop with a large selection of souvenirs. All together it is very impressive and makes you want to come back again.?
